STARMOBILE ASTRA 3000mah homemade battery
I bought my astra November last year (2012) and i was amazed by the phones features. The only drawback that i noticed (for me) was it lacks battery capacity. The battery dont lasts the whole day with
- data connection always on
- intermittent downloads and browsing
- 2 hours GPS
- bittorrent
- listening to google play via BH503 bluetooth headset
- taking photos using camera for a long time. Sometimes it takes me 4 hours straight to complete taking photos on every detail of my DIY projects. (LCD light is on mid range or sometimes full range)
-Intermittent text message or calls.
I mostly use this phone for internet related stuffs that's why i was disappointed by the 1.5A capacity of the stock battery which supplies this DUAL CORE phone. To solve the problem, some users installs battery saving apps or do Battery calibration which is not good for the battery if done always due to battery strain, and there is no battery with a higher capacity available in the market. I use battery saving app but it gets my phone hanging sometimes so i uninstalled the app and get going with the normal usage.
In-order to solve the problem without battery calibration or battery saving app, I come up with the idea of making a battery with a higher capacity so i can use this phone for a long time. And this is done by following the basic principle of electronics. Series batteries can increase the potential difference (voltage) and gives the same capacity (amp). Parallel batteries can increase the capacity with the same potential difference. By following this principle, i come up with the battery which is double the capacity of the stock battery of the phone. Many people are asking me on how did i do it. So the trick is this, look for a battery with the same potential difference and different or same in capacity as these specs are critical. Find a way to make it compact as much as possible and solder them in parallel but be careful on soldering them because batteries may explode if shorted and the outer frame of the battery which holds the terminals is plastic that's why it can melt by too much heat. As the battery capacity increases with this method, the battery size also increases. The phones battery cavity is just enough for the stock battery to hold, so to house the bigger battery to the phone, i cut a hole on the back case which follows the batteries size. I put some carbon fiber stickers to make it look a little presentable. Now my battery last longer for the same usage.
Advantages
- longer battery life lets me use my bittorent app downloading all night while sleeping without hooking it to the charger.
- I can use Internet related apps longer
- take photos and videos longer
- play games longer.
- data connection always on for longer time
Disadvantages
- the back cover of the phone needs cutting or holes depending on the style.
- this should be done by persons with good soldering techniques as this procedure is too risky and can damage the battery and the phone, and also can cost you new battery.
- In-accurate reading of the battery level indicator. it holds to 15% for a day or 2.
Im doing this conversion to my other gadgets since i got my crappy gadgets back in 2007. i also did this to my tablet which is also posted here.
